KUCHING (Jan 18): Over 1,000 people participated in the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) mobile service programme held at the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (Iskcon) multipurpose hall here yesterday.
Batu Kitang assemblyman Dato Lo Khere Chiang said the event aimed to bring essential services closer to the people, especially those who faced challenges in travelling during working hours.
“Not everybody has a car or the free time to travel from office to office, especially during working hours. By organising this programme on a Sunday, people can come here conveniently and get the assistance they need,” he said when met by reporters.
He explained the programme functioned as a one-stop agency offering various forms of assistance, with a focus on services and support for senior citizens such as registration for Kenyalang Gold Card and Senior Citizen Health Benefit.
Meanwhile, Lo said that Iskcon Kuching had received assistance from the Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) and noted that it took this opportunity to give back to the community, especially by sponsoring the venue for the programme.
“I would like to thank Reverend Prabhu, who not only provided this multipurpose hall (for this programme) but also generously provided food, breakfast and lunch for all participants.
“Not everyone remembers the generosity (of the state government) but Iskcon Kuching has taken this opportunity to give back to the community.
“I would like to encourage everyone to do the same, whether they are religious bodies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) or other organisations that have benefitted in one way or another from government assistance,” he said.
Also present were Iskcon Kuching president Kripa Sindhu Krishna Das Prabhu and organising chairman Alvin Chong.
