KUCHING (Jan 16): A total of 245 Year 1 pupils from three primary schools in the Pantai Damai constituency received special assistance through the Back-to-School Pack 2026 programme.
According to a Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) report, Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Project Coordinator for Regional Development Agencies, DBKU and Islamic Affairs) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said the initiative is important for creating a comfortable, safe, and enjoyable school environment for new pupils.
The Pantai Damai assemblyman noted that the programme aligns with the Education Ministry’s efforts to make the first week of schooling an adjustment and adaptation phase, particularly for Year 1 students.
“Early school experiences greatly influence pupils’ interest and attendance. When they feel comfortable and supported from the very first day, it helps to reduce fear and prevents truancy,” he said during the handover ceremony.
The programme benefitted 110 pupils from SK Matu Baru, 71 pupils from SK Rampangi, and 64 pupils from SK Telaga Air.
Dr Abdul Rahman expressed appreciation to the schools, teachers, parent-teacher associations (PTAs), the local community, and sponsors who contributed to the programme, including providing food and drinks for the pupils.
He added that consistent school attendance is vital to help students stay on track academically, while also building self-confidence and a strong foundation from an early age.
“Education is the most valuable asset for our children’s future. It is a shared responsibility of all parties to guide and support them from Year 1 to Year 6 so that they will have the opportunity to pursue higher studies,” he said.
Organised by the Pantai Damai ADUN Service Centre in collaboration with the Association of Wives of Ministers and Assistant Ministers (Sabati) and Ronald McDonald House Charities Malaysia, the programme reflects ongoing efforts to support the welfare and educational well-being of children in the constituency.
Also present at the event was Sabati treasurer Datin Siti Shorgayah Ahmad Zaidin.
