SIBU (Jan 2): Bawang Assan assemblyman and Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) senior vice president Wong Soon Koh said the party has always remained committed to a rational, pragmatic, moderate and people-centred approach.
He said that at the local level, the party does not pursue grand promises.
“Instead, we focus on steady progress, working step by step to secure resources for our communities and to solve real, practical problems faced by the people,” he said at a year-end luncheon gathering involving Bawang Assan PDP branch committee members and community leaders held on Thursday.
Wong said politics is not solely about elections, just as a political party is not merely about slogans.
“True politics is about standing with the people in difficult times, and a responsible party is one that chooses to shoulder responsibility when challenges arise,” he said.
Reflecting on the past year, Wong said 2025 had not been an easy one, with the country facing economic pressures, rising living costs and increasing public expectations, particularly in areas such as youth employment and community well-being.
Against this backdrop, he said the role played by the Bawang Assan PDP Branch committee members and the community leaders has been especially important.
“You are the closest to the grassroots. You are the first to hear the voices of the people, to see their challenges and to help bridge the gap between the community and the authorities.
“Whether it is attending to community matters, handling public concerns, organising activities or assisting those in need, your dedication and quiet contributions deserve our deepest appreciation,” he said.
Looking ahead to 2026, Wong said the party would continue to strengthen its efforts in three key areas.
“First, to deepen our engagement with the community, so that the party branch is truly part of the community and not distant from the people,” he said.
Secondly, he said the party aims to recruit more young leaders by encouraging youth participation and giving them space to contribute new ideas and fresh energy.
“Third, to continue advocating for fair and equitable development for Sibu and Sarawak.”
