SIBU (Feb 13): More than 20,000 people are expected to attend the Progressive Democratic Party Chinese New Year 2026 Open House at Li Hua Island Commercial Centre on February 19, in what will be the largest edition since the event was first held four years ago.

Organising chairman Joshua Ting said the celebration, held in conjunction with the visit of the Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister (Motac), will run from 8am to 1pm and is open to all communities throughout Sibu, not only those in the Dudong constituency.

“We welcome everyone, and the whole of Sibu is invited. People from all races and backgrounds are welcome to join our Chinese New Year Open House,” he told a press conference.

Ting, who is political secretary to the Premier, said official invitations have been sent to all invited guests, including elected representatives from their party, Sibu MPs and senators from the division.

He disclosed that this year’s open house will offer a wide array of local delicacies, freshly prepared on-site to accommodate the anticipated large turnout.

Visitors can also look forward to lively entertainment throughout the morning, including Hua Yue music, cultural dances, singing and lion dance performances. The venue will follow a Year of the Horse theme, complete with a mascot for photo sessions.

Towards this end, Ting expressed hope that the celebration will highlight Sarawak’s multicultural spirit.

“As we celebrate the Year of the Horse, may this Open House reflect the true spirit of Sarawak; unity in diversity, harmony in culture and prosperity for everyone.

“We wish everyone a happy and blessed Chinese New Year 2026,” he said.
