SIBU (March 7): Efforts to tackle flooding in Kampung Sentosa are being strengthened with plans underway for Phase 2 of a flood mitigation project in the area.

Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng said the proposal for the project was tabled at the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) last May, following plans prepared by the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID).

“Phase 1 of the project has been completed and has already shown positive results, particularly in addressing drainage issues and road conditions in the village,” he said when met by reporters after distributing ‘bubur lambuk’ to residents on Thursday.

He explained that Phase 2 was crucial, in view of Kampung Sentosa’s location in a natural basin, where the external drains are higher than those within the housing area.

“This prevents water from flowing out naturally and requires diversion to Sungai Seduan,” he said.

The upcoming phase will cover a wider area and is expected to cost nearly double the first phase’s RM21.388 million, involving the construction of additional drains, improved water management systems, and some road upgrading works to enhance the overall drainage efficiency.

Chieng said he had requested a government allocation of RM56. 6 million to implement the second phase of the flood mitigation project.

“The project aims to improve rainwater management, reduce flood risks, and ensure the comfort and safety of local residents,” he added.
