SIBU (Aug 16): The Sibu Resident Office together with the Sarawak Protocol, Ceremonies and Event Management Unit (UPAN) will start the preparation for the National Day celebration immediately after the conclusion of Borneo Cultural Festival (BCF).

Sibu Resident Abang Mohamad Porkan Abang Budiman in a press conference yesterday said two main events will take place at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang in conjunction with the celebration.

“They are the Countdown Concert, scheduled for Aug 30 in the evening, and a Fun Walk, scheduled for Aug 31 at 5.30am.

“There will also be Bazaar Merdeka at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang Phase 2, which is a great opportunity for local entrepreneurs to showcase their products.

“We encourage people to come and support the event,” he said.

On the Countdown Concert, Abang Mohamad Porkan said that local and artistes from outside of Sarawak have been invited to perform at the event.

“About 5,000 people are expected to turn up for the concert and the Fun Walk, respectively,” he added.

Moreover, he said the preparation for the celebration’s main highlight, which is the National Day Celebration Assembly at University of Technology Sarawak’s Chancellor Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud’s Hall, is ongoing.

He also urged the local communities, especially those in Sibu, to fly the Malaysia and Sarawak flags at their business premises and offices to create a lively atmosphere for the state-level National Day celebration.
