SARIKEI, Sept 19: Almost RM1 million in educational incentives are provided to support student excellence in the Tanjong Manis Parliament, thereby injecting motivation into younger generations to continue striving for success in education.
Member of Parliament Tanjong Sweet, Dato Ir. Yusuf Abd Wahab said the initiative included channeling incentives to 121 students from Sarikei who showed proud achievements in their lessons.
"I take this seriously, because science is the best weapon for changing lives and a safer future.
"In this regard, I hope that all students in the area (Tanjong Manis Parliament), make full use of the incentives provided by diligent learning", he said at the closing ceremony of Sarawak Children's Mansang Zone Sarikei 2026 Program at Sarikei Baru National High School (SMK) today.
Yusuf said the efforts to strengthen education excellence were also complemented with implementation of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) related modules as well as post-SPM planning throughout the three-day programme.
"As a representative of the people, I understand the challenges faced by students, especially in building interest in STEM, as well as questions about the direction after taking exams", he said.
In related developments, he called for the human development aspect to continue to be given attention by ensuring that young people gain skills and experience.
"Of the 10 young volunteers who are running this program, I understand nine of them are local Sarikei. This shows that the local youth are not only receiving benefits, but also being given space to lead and succeed in the program", he said.
In the meantime, Yusuf also paid tribute to the Sarawak Volunteers Association (Sarawak Volunteers), Nyambung Blaja, PETROS, TEGAS, CENTEX and the Institute of Biological Diversity and Environmental Conservation (IBEC), Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) for their cooperation in implementing the programme.
He hopes that such initiatives can be continued in the future to support efforts to improve educational excellence and development of young people in the region. - TVS
