MIRI (Oct 26): The RM116.5-million Marudi Bridge project has been completed early this week.

However, the Public Works Department (JKR) has to conduct the final checks and verification before the official announcement can be made, JKR Miri divisional engineer told The Borneo Post yesterday.

“The contractor has informed us they had completed the bridge last week, and my supervision team just had a joint site visit today with the contractor.

“We will have a meeting next week with the contractor and consultant to decide a completion date,” he said.

From being categorised as ‘sick’ previously, the project had turned around after the appointment of a rescue contractor in 2022, with new progress made every week.

In July, Deputy Public Health, Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil had predicted that the project is on track for completion by Christmas this year.

The Marudi assemblyman looked forward to the opening of the bridge to the public, saying it would be a game changer in terms of economic growth and road accessibility.

The project started in 2019 by the previous contractor, and was originally scheduled to be completed in January 2022.
