KUCHING, Mar 11: A planned RM80 million orangutan wildlife conservation project at Gunung Lesong has the potential to become a new iconic nature-based tourism attraction in Sri Aman Division once completed.

According to a news report by TVS, Sri Aman Development Agency (SADA) chair Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim said the initiative is among the largest projects planned by the agency this year.

She noted that the construction of road access to the area would not only support the conservation project but also open up opportunities for new tourism products in the area, particularly through the development of the proposed Gunung Lesong eco-tourism destination.

“If there is road access to the area, it will open up new tourism potential through Gunung Lesong Eco-Tourism, which could become an iconic project within the SADA region,” she said when met during a SADA breaking fast event here on Tuesday (Mar 10).

Meanwhile, Rohani said SADA has lined up nine development projects with a total estimated cost of about RM377.35 million to be implemented this year.

She explained that the initiatives form part of broader efforts to accelerate development in Sri Aman, particularly in rural areas.

Rohani added that the implementation of these projects is supported by the RM1.5 billion development allocation announced by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg to drive development under the State’s regional development agencies.

“Most of the planned projects involve the construction of basic infrastructure such as roads, bridges and farm roads aimed at improving connectivity for villages and longhouses,” she said.

She further stressed that cooperation with agencies such as the Public Works Department (JKR) and the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) is crucial to ensure smooth implementation and deliver meaningful benefits to rural communities. — DayakDaily
