KUCHING, Apr 24: Sarawak’s tourism sector continues to perform strongly, generating average monthly revenue of over RM1 billion and cementing its role as a key driver of the State’s economy.
In a TVS news report, Sarawak Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, said the achievement was driven by a significant increase in the number of visitors, both domestic and international, over the past year.
“The number of tourists and visitors has been very encouraging. Despite facing several issues such as tensions in the Middle East, the number of visitors recorded in February and March remained at a very satisfactory level.
“Over the past year, the overall average for 12 months shows that tourism revenue alone exceeded RM12 billion,” he said while officiating the Sibu International Powerboat Race 2026 at the Pulau Li Hua riverfront in Sibu today.
According to him, the development demonstrates that the tourism industry is on a strong footing and reflects visitors’ confidence in Sarawak as a preferred destination.
He added that the economic spillover from the tourism sector is not only enjoyed by the government but also directly benefits local communities.
Meanwhile, he noted that hosting large-scale events such as festivals and international sports competitions plays an important role in attracting tourists to the state.
“Among the attractions are the international dragon boat race in Kuching, as well as various cultural festivals and sporting events in other cities such as Sibu and Bintulu,” he said.
In this regard, he added that efforts to strengthen the tourism calendar will continue to be intensified to ensure Sarawak remains a top destination in the region. — DayakDaily
