Some of the state bowlers signal their readiness for the challenges in Sarawak.

KOTA KINABALU (Jan 26): Sabah tenpin bowling will be out to stake a strong claim for top honours when they compete in two major tournaments in Kuching, Sarawak this week.

Led by head of contingent Aisyah Abdullah, Sabah will field teams in the East Malaysian leg of the Storm U22 Storming Asia from Jan 25 to 26 and the Sarawak Hornbill Team Cup from Jan 27 to 31. Both events will be held at Sarawak Megalanes at Batu Kawa in Kuching.

The state keglers are led by team manager Mohd Kamsul Shah and coaches Steven Lok, Nurul Amirah Amirul and Merieza Mansur.

The squad of 35 will carry Sabah challenge in the Storm championship which is open to bowlers aged 22 and below.

“The event is viewed as a crucial platform for Sabah’s emerging talents to prove themselves.
Outstanding performers from the tournament stand a chance of being selected to represent the Sabah–Sarawak zone to the Storm U-22 Cup in Sunway Megalanes,” said Sabah Tenpin Bowliny Association (PTBNS) president Rozzainny Sham Talip via WhatsApp on Sunday.

A total of 36 state bowlers representing nine teams will vie for the Sarawak Hornhill Team Cup. The team-format tournament will feature Doubles, Trios, Team and Baker events.

Rozzainny is optimistic of a strong showing from the state bowlers, perticularly given the team’s positive history at competition venue.

“It is hoped that the Sabah tenpin bowling team will be able to spring a surprise by reaching the podium.
Sarawak Megalanes has long been a familiar and successful hunting ground for Sabah bowlers, particularly those under the state talent (Bakat) and back-up athletes (Pelapis) development programme,” he said.
