KUCHING: The community plays a critical role in safeguarding children’s rights, underscoring the importance of protection and proactive measures to ensure the well-being of every child.

Deputy Minister in the Premier of Sarawak’s Department (Law, MA63, and State-Federal Relations), Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali, said children have rights recognised by the United Nations (UN) to enjoy a happy life free from harm, and Malaysia also have specific laws that protect children’s rights.

“The Child Protection Advocacy Programme aims to improve children’s understanding of their need for protection, inform them about possible actions by parents, guardians, or the community, and allow the Child Welfare Team (PKKK) to better engage with children in their areas.

“The four fundamental rights of children that are essential and upheld in this country are the right to life, protection, development, and participation,” she said in her speech at the SMK Semerah Padi here today (Aug 4).

Additionally, Sharifah Hasidah said if any of these four rights are not provided, children can speak up and seek help from adults, such as teachers or parents.

“However, if you need help but are unsure or afraid, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance by contacting the Talian Kasih hotline at 15999.

“Remember that we all have our rights to feel safe, and by doing this, you can protect yourselves and your friends,” she urged.

Furthermore, she added that adults can also play an important role in ensuring the safety of the future generation by calling the Talian Kasih hotline if they notice that a child is being abused or neglected.

“The community must be aware of what to do when they notice a child is suffering from abuse or neglect.

“If you see something suspicious, please report it immediately to the police or the Talian Kasih instead of recording videos for social media,” she said, expressing concern.

Sharifah Hasidah also emphasised that the children are Sarawak’s future, especially under the leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, who has established various strategies and action plans to ensure that Sarawak continues to progress and prosper.

“We have a development strategy until 2030, aiming for Sarawak to become advanced and high-income, and the ones who will support Sarawak from 2030 to 2050 are today’s children.

“And I hope your attendance here today will help us achieve that by ensuring the safety of our children’s mental and physical wellbeing,” she said.
