KUCHING (Aug 13): The Magistrates’ Court here today fined a sales assistant RM2,000 in default three months’ jail for possessing an illegal lottery ticket last May.
Magistrate Zubaidah Sharkawi imposed the sentence on Eddy Hazizi Zailani, 32, after he pleaded guilty to Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, which provides for a fine not exceeding RM5,000 or an imprisonment term that may extend to six months, or both, upon conviction.
He committed the offence at an unnamed premises near Jalan Penrissen, Kota Sentosa here around 4.40pm on May 25.
Based on the facts of the case, police raided the premises at around 4.40pm and arrested Eddy.
During the raid, the police seized a mobile phone, a piece of paper with numbers written on it, a pencil, and RM75.
The investigation revealed that Eddy was in possession of a piece of paper with illegal lottery numbers written on it, which he intended to purchase.
The case was prosecuted by Insp Nur Shafiqa Nyaie Ilin, while Eddy was unrepresented by legal counsel.
