KUCHING, Oct 12: Sarawak has allocated another RM29 million in 2027 for urgent redevelopment or upgrading works at four schools, on top of RM1 billion previously advanced to Putrajaya for school upgrades.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the additional allocation would go towards upgrading Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Gedong, Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Sageng, Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SJKC) Tong Ah and SK Tupong.
“Besides the RM1 billion funding, of which RM700 million had been disbursed to date by Sarawak government as an advance payment on Federal loans, an additional allocation of RM29 million is provided in 2027 for urgent redevelopment or upgrading of schools,” he said when tabling the Supply Bill (2027), 2026, or Sarawak Budget 2027, at the State Legislative Assembly (DUS) today.
He also announced plans to establish a Sarawak Education Council to strengthen and coordinate the State’s education policies and programmes.
“The council will align secondary education; science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) development; teachers’ training and tertiary education with the talent requirements of Sarawak’s strategic industries,” he said.
This, he added, would ensure that Sarawak’s priorities and aspirations remained at the heart of its education system.
The council would also facilitate the development of international and tertiary education, with the aim of strengthening Sarawak’s appeal as a regional education hub and attracting students and talent from beyond its borders. — DayakDaily
