MUKAH, Oct 3: A semiconductor chip designed by a Sarawakian and manufactured locally has been purchased for use in electric meters in China, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Speaking at the Sarawakku Sayang Programme in Mukah today, Abang Johari said the development demonstrated Sarawak’s growing capability in semiconductor technology through local research, innovation and expertise.

“God willing, China has now purchased our chip for electric meters, which will then be marketed in China,” he said.

Abang Johari said the chip was designed by a Sarawakian and manufactured by a Sarawak-based foundry, marking progress towards developing semiconductor products locally.

“A chip made in Sarawak, designed by a Sarawakian and produced by a Sarawak foundry company,” he said.

The development comes as Abang Johari has urged students to pursue science and technology-related fields, including artificial intelligence and cybersecurity, to meet the growing demand for skilled talent as Sarawak expands its semiconductor and high-tech industries.

He said Sarawak needed to continue developing local expertise and embracing new technologies to strengthen its manufacturing and agriculture sectors.

“We need our children to have knowledge and skills. In the manufacturing and agriculture sectors, we need knowledge and new technology to continue developing and remain competitive,” he said.

Abang Johari said strengthening human capital and technological capabilities would be important as Sarawak develops a knowledge-based economy. — DayakDaily
