KUCHING (Aug 15): The nine-member Sarawak diving team has been undergoing intensive five-hour training sessions six days a week to prepare for the 21st Malaysian Games (Sukma).

The divers representing Sarawak are Enrique Maccartney Harold, Eilisha Rania Abrial Rajagopal, Elvis Priestly Clement, Awang Sharzan Nasrin Awang Nasaruddin, Dayang Nursharzyra Awang Nasaruddin, Soh Tze Kang, Muhammad Lutfir Rahman Mohammad Razak, Nurul Farisya Alia Affendi, and Trisya Ann Voon.

Manager Ikeram Yan said the team coached by Shi Yang and Rosatimah Muhammad aims to leave a lasting mark on the national stage.

“We’ve put in the hours and effort, and we’re ready to make a significant impact at Sukma XXI,” he told The Borneo Post.

He said team members aspire to compete on even larger stages in future, including at the Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, and the Olympics.

While the team’s expectations are high, Ikeram acknowledged the unpredictable nature of sports.

“Of course, we aim for the best, but we must also remember that any competition is a mix of skill and luck,” he noted.

He stressed the importance of collaboration between sports development officers, coaches, and athletes.

“We need to work closely together to ensure our team’s success. This time around, things are looking up, especially with the addition of a ladies team,” he added.

Sukma XXI diving events will take place on Aug 19-23 at the Pandelela Rinong Aquatic Centre.
