KUCHING, May 21: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has hinted that the Sarawak State Election may be drawing near, while stressing that the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government remains an important fortress in defending the State against divisive politics.

According to a report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), although he did not disclose when the election would be held, the Sarawak Premier said the current State government’s term only lasts until February next year.

“I myself do not know when the election will be, but what I know is that our (government’s) term lasts until February. It is actually getting close, it is getting close, but I still do not know when the ‘drums will sound’,” he said when speaking at the GPS Backbenchers Night here last night.

Abang Johari also voiced concern over the increasingly divisive political landscape in Peninsular Malaysia, warning that such political instability could pose risks to the country.

As such, he called on GPS leaders and members to remain united in rejecting divisive political culture and to continue safeguarding the welfare of the people.

“That is why the GPS Government is very important as a fortress for us to defend Sarawak,” he said.

The Premier stressed that unity within the ruling coalition is essential to ensure Sarawak continued to enjoy political stability and steady development amid uncertain national political dynamics. – DayakDaily
