KUCHING, 4 Oct: Sarawak micro, small and medium enterprises are urged to improve the quality and compliance of products in order to seize opportunities in international halal markets with great potential.
Deputy Prime Minister of Sarawak, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said opportunities in the halal industry are not only focused on food and beverages but also include fashion, handicraft and various consumer products.
"If we want to be involved in the halal industry, it has huge potential. We need to know what the conditions are for engaging in this halal market, not only in terms of food but how the products are processed and comply with standards", he said.
He who is also the Minister of International Trade, Industry and Investment Sarawak said this while addressing the completion ceremony of Micro Excellence Entrepreneur Awards 2026 at MetroCity Event Centre (MCEC), here today.
According to Awang Tengah, local entrepreneurs have the ability to produce quality products, but need to understand market requirements and raise standards in order for their products to compete internationally.
"We have the ability. What's important is how we try to penetrate the wider market. In the trade mission, we always bring small and medium enterprises covering handicrafts, food, beverages and fashion", he said.
The growth of market opportunities also exists through the introduction of domestic and foreign investment into Sarawak, including demand for products and services in industrial areas, thus opening up space for local entrepreneurs to be part of the supply chain.
