KUCHING, April 27: Sarawak expects a slight increase in costs for the upgrading of sports facilities in preparation for the 2027 SEA Games, mainly due to rising construction material prices, says Sarawak Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
He said the increase in costs is partly influenced by global factors, including disruptions linked to geopolitical developments in the Middle East, which have contributed to higher material prices affecting contractors and ongoing projects.
“I believe there will be a slight increase in cost, but we cannot avoid it as prices of materials have gone up.
“We will evaluate and bring it to the Cabinet for consideration,” he told reporters when met after attending the Kembara Inspirasi Belia Akar Umbi (KIBAR) programme in Kampung Semeba today.
Karim also said despite the expected increase, preparations for the Games remain on track, with upgrading works at key venues progressing steadily, including Stadium Sarawak, which will host the opening ceremony.
He added that close monitoring is being carried out to ensure all projects are completed on schedule, with a target completion date set for June next year.
“There will be no delay. In fact, some sites are working day and night to ensure everything is completed on time,” he added.
Sarawak is set to host 17 sports during the 2027 SEA Games, with Malaysia as the overall host and the State playing a key role in the regional sporting event.
Meanwhile, the federal Youth and Sports Minister Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari is scheduled to visit key sporting venues in Sarawak tomorrow morning (April 28) together with the Malaysia SEA Games Organising Committee (MASOC) and State officials to assess the latest progress of facilities and infrastructure ahead of the Games. — DayakDaily
