Sarawak eyes cricket semi-finals despite weather setback

KUCHING: Sarawak’s head coach for the T20 cricket team, Chiew Pok Cheong, remains optimistic despite the rain-interrupted match today (Aug 15) that could have crucial implications for their semi-final aspirations.

Speaking after the match, which ended in a shared point due to inclement weather, Chiew acknowledged the importance of the match in securing a semi-final spot.

“We didn’t expect it to rain, but we have to take the point. It’s not ideal, but it’s acceptable,” he said.

The Sarawak team is now shifting its focus to the final group match against Kuala Lumpur. With Kuala Lumpur securing a victory on Wednesday, Chiew is aware of the challenge ahead but remains confident.

“We have seen the past two games against Kuala Lumpur. I have 100 per cent confidence that we will beat KL, but it depends on how the team performs. We have a target, a plan, and if our best men play to their potential, we can achieve it,” he added.

When asked if the upcoming match could be considered an easy win, he was cautious. “I wouldn’t say it’s an easy game. Kuala Lumpur is also aiming for victory. It might be a bit tough, but we are prepared to give it our all as hosts.”

He also elaborated on the technical aspects of their current standing, explaining that the run rate will play a critical role in determining whether Sarawak advances to the semi-finals.

“We and Kuala Lumpur are currently tied on points, but the run rate is slightly in their favour. If tomorrow’s weather affects their match against Melaka, and they draw, our chances to top the group improve. But it all hinges on our performance and the run rate,” he explained.

Sarawak’s chances of advancing hinge on the outcome of Friday’s match, where they could either top their group or finish second, depending on the run rate and results from other groups.

“We have a chance,” Chiew affirmed. “But we must execute our game plan flawlessly in the final match to secure our spot.”

As the team prepares for their final group stage match, he emphasised the need to maintain momentum.

With no games scheduled tomorrow, he plans to keep the team focused and prevent any loss of intensity.

“The break can affect momentum, but we’ll ensure the players stay sharp and ready to go all out on game day,” he said.
