KUCHING (March 12): A total of 64 illegal immigrants were detained during separate enforcement raids carried out by the Sarawak Immigration Department here between March 11 and 12.

The integrated operation, conducted by the department’s enforcement division with 34 officers, took place from early morning through late at night at multiple locations across the city.

Daytime raids targeted a construction site in Muara Tebas and several eateries in Pending Heights suspected of involvement in online gambling activities.

The operation later continued with a nighttime raid on an entertainment centre in the city.

“Checks carried out on individuals at the locations found that some of the foreign nationals were suspected of committing offences under the Immigration Act 1959/63, including not possessing valid travel documents and overstaying,” said the department in a statement.

Those detained included citizens of China, Vietnam, Laos, the Philippines, and Indonesia.

All were taken to the Immigration depot for further investigation and legal action in accordance with existing immigration laws.
