KUCHING, May 19: Sarawak’s preparations for the SEA Games 2027 are on track, with all of the sporting facilities involved targeted to be fully operational by the first and second quarters of next year.
In delivering his ministerial winding-up speech, Minister for Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said upgrading works for the following 11 SEA Games facilities have been approved under the 13th Malaysia Plan and are currently progressing according to schedule:
- Stadium Sarawak
- Stadium Perpaduan
- Lawn Bowl Arena
- Wushu Training Centre
- Sarawak Lawn Tennis Centre
- Sarawak Shooting Range
- Sarawak Squash Centre
- Cricket and Rugby Ground
- Pandelela Rinong Aquatic Centre
- Sarawak Archery Centre
- Pusat Petanque Sarawak
“The upgrading project for Stadium Sarawak, with a duration of 12 months, is expected to be completed on Jan 29, 2027. Meanwhile, the upgrading and refurbishment of the remaining ten projects are expected to commence in the second quarter of 2026.
“All facilities are targeted to be fully operational by the first and second quarters of 2027,” he said at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting today.
Abdul Karim said that with an estimated allocation of RM636.5 million from the State coffers, the Sarawak government demonstrates its commitment to ensuring that every aspect of preparation is delivered in a smooth and timely manner.
“I am confident that with the strong support and teamwork of all parties involved, we will successfully deliver a prestigious and memorable SEA Games 2027,” he said.
Sarawak is expected to host the opening ceremony for the SEA Games 2027 scheduled for Sept 18, 2027, at Stadium Sarawak.
In addition, the State will host 17 out of 38 sports: aquatics, e-sports, golf, tennis, lawn bowls, muay, cricket, taekwondo, petanque, squash, gymnastics, basketball, archery, shooting, tenpin bowling, weightlifting, and wushu. — DayakDaily
