SIBU: Sarawak secured a spot in the semi-finals after a commanding 3-1 victory over Perak in the quarterfinals this morning (August 19).
Sarawak began its group stage campaign on a strong note, with its women’s singles player Wong Ling Ching securing a comfortable victory against Perak’s Nur Aina Maisarah Muhammad Hatta.
Wong, currently ranked 80th in the world, dominated the match, winning 21-10, 21-9.
In contrast, the men’s singles saw Sarawak’s Goh Shun Huat facing a tougher challenge against Perak’s Eogene Ewe Eon.
Eogene claimed the first set 21-16, but Goh fought hard to push the match into a rubber set, only to fall short in the end, losing narrowly 18-21.
Sarawak bounced back in its mixed doubles, with Jeremy Juan Zhen Liang and Kashley Khi Tze Yin winning in straight sets against Perak’s Ng Jhi Hao and Vannee Gobi.
The Sarawak mixed duo triumphed in a thrilling match, scoring 21-17 and 21-18, contributing a point to Sarawak in its group stage match against Perak, winning 2-1.
The home team’s momentum continued in the women’s doubles, with Genevie Lim Tsin Yeen and Lee Zi Suen overpowering Perak’s Cheng Pei En and Chong Jie Yu in straight sets, both finishing 21-18.
Following their victory, Sarawak advanced to the semi-finals alongside Selangor, Penang, and Federal Territory, who defeated Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, and Johor, respectively.
Sarawak will face reigning champions Selangor in the semi-finals this afternoon.
