KUCHING (Jan 8): State Secretary of Sarawak Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki paid a courtesy call on State Secretary of Sabah Datuk Seri Panglima Safar Untong at the latter’s office at Menara Kinabalu in Kota Kinabalu.

During the meeting, Abu Bakar briefed the Sabah state government on AirBorneo, which had taken over the Rural Air Services (Ras) operations from MASwings.

Abu Bakar, who is also AirBorneo chairman, said the takeover is essential to ensure the continuity and improvement of air services in Sabah and Sarawak, particularly in rural and remote areas.

“This move is also aimed at strengthening connectivity between the two states,” he said in a statement.

He added that both parties also exchanged views on matters of mutual interest, including efforts to enhance regional integration across Borneo region and strategic measures to further strengthen socio-economic development in Sabah and Sarawak.

Abu Bakar also expressed his appreciation for the warm reception from the Sabah state government during the visit.

For the record, AirBorneo launched its inaugural flight to Mukah and Tanjung Manis from Kuching International Airport on Jan 2.

The launch followed AirBorneo’s successful acquisition of the MASwings Ras operations, which took effect on Jan 1, pursuant to the Sale and Purchase Agreement signed on Feb 12 last year.
