Sarawak State Secretary visits Gedong flood evacuees to assess relief efforts

KUCHING (Jan 10): Sarawak State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki visited flood victims at the Gedong community hall temporary evacuation centre (PPS) today, to assess the level of preparedness and the management of relief operations for those affected.

According to a Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) report, he, along with Gedong MP Rodiyah Sapiee, also took the opportunity to meet and engage with the flood victims.

“For the record, a total of 21 flood victims from five households are currently housed at the PPS as of 11am, following the flooding in the surrounding areas,” the report stated.

Both Mohamad Abu Bakar and Rodiyah expressed their appreciation to all security and rescue agencies directly involved in the evacuation and management of the PPS.

The affected families include one from Kampung Datuk Patinggi Muai, Gedong, and four from Kampung Kanchong Baru (Sungai Girang), Gedong.

Of the total number of evacuees, three adult men, six adult women, six boys, and five girls, including an infant girl, were relocated to the PPS for safety and wellbeing.

Also present were Sarawak Deputy State Secretary Datu Felicia Tan Ya Hua; Permanent Secretary of the State Ministry of Women, Children and Community Wellbeing Sarawak (KPWK) Nur Alina Abdullah @ Colliner Gohe; and Deputy Director of the Sarawak Safety and Enforcement Unit (UKPS) Abang Ahmad Abang Julai.

Other officials included Samarahan Division Resident and Chairman of the Samarahan Division Disaster Management Committee Mohamad Irwan Bahari Bujang; Gedong District Officer and Chairman of the Simunjan District Disaster Management Committee Tamida Da’adi; and Simunjan District Police Chief DSP Rafhan Kepli.
