KUCHING: Sarawak has set an ambitious goal to increase its domestic gas utilisation from the current 6% to 30% by 2030, according to Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.
Speaking at the Petros Connect 2024 event at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching on Tuesday (Oct 29), he said the initiative is aimed at ensuring a sustainable gas supply for Sarawak’s domestic needs and supporting long-term industrial growth.
“The Kuching Low-Carbon Gas Hub will be crucial in achieving a cleaner energy future,” he noted.
He further announced plans by Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS) to develop a new Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) import facility alongside a deep seaport in Kuching, as well as offshore gas field development.
“Petros also plans to establish a carbon capture and storage (CCS) facility in Western Sarawak.”
Awang Tengah remarked that these developments could position the Kuching hub as a transformative force for Sarawak and Malaysia as a whole.
He commended Petros for its achievements since its inception seven years ago, noting that the company has grown to become Malaysia’s third-largest oil and gas producer and the sole gas aggregator in Sarawak, overseeing LPG distribution across the state.
Awang Tengah highlighted Petros Connect as a vital platform for engaging local and international stakeholders in the oil and gas industry.
“This platform fosters industrial growth by supporting the exploration of new oil and gas fields and the adoption of advanced technologies, such as CCS, aligning with our Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030 for sustainable, low-carbon regional growth,” he added.
Also in attendance at the event were Petros chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Hamid Bugo and other distinguished guests.
