Sarawak to export 30MW electricity to Sabah starting Dec 2025

KUCHING, Dec 1: Sarawak is set to begin exporting 30MW of electricity to neighbouring Sabah starting this month (December 2025), a significant step towards realising the ambitious goals of the Borneo Power Grid (BPG) and the Asean Power Grid (APG).

Minister for Utility and Telecommunication (MUT), Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, announced that efforts to export electrical energy across borders are being intensified to position Sarawak as the battery of Associations of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean).

Sarawak has already been exporting approximately 100MW of power to West Kalimantan, Indonesia, since 2016, and the upcoming 30MW supply to Sabah will further solidify its role as a regional energy hub.

He also updated Sarawak’s regional connectivity plans, with following the signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Brunei Darussalam on September 3, 2025, the governments of Brunei and Sarawak are currently in the process of negotiation a Power Exchange Agreement (PEA) to facilitate supply interconnection.

“Meanwhile, projects concerning electricity export to Singapore and Peninsular Malaysia are now in the engagement session stage with the various government agencies involved in the respective countries, including Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia,” said Julaihi during his ministerial winding up speech at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting today.

The Minister highlighted significant progress on the Singapore venture, confirming that the Energy Market Authority (EMA) of Singapore issued a conditional approval for the electricity supply interconnection project on October 17, 2025.

He said the approval means the project has successfully cleared its preliminary assessment phase and technical and financial feasibility studies, paving the way for the next stages of development. — DayakDaily
