KUCHING, May 15: Sarawak Water Sdn Bhd has made its first-ever zakat contribution amounting to RM325,000 to Tabung Baitulmal Sarawak, in a symbolic handover witnessed by the Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Deputy Minister for Utility and Telecommunication, Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, said the contribution marks a significant milestone for the newly consolidated water entity.
“This is the first time Sarawak Water, as a corporate entity, has contributed zakat to Tabung Baitulmal Sarawak, and it was witnessed by the Premier earlier today,” he told reporters after the ceremony that took place at Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) Complex today.
Julaihi explained that beyond corporate tax obligations to the Inland Revenue Board, the company is also fulfilling its responsibility through zakat contributions.
“This is part of our corporate responsibility. It can also be offset from corporate income tax by LHDN later. That is the main purpose,” he added.
He noted that Sarawak Water was formed through the consolidation of Kuching Water Board, Sibu Water Board and LAKU Management, and was officially launched by the Premier last year.
Meanwhile, Sarawak Water acting chief executive officer, Malseni Jamal, said the business zakat contribution not only fulfils the company’s obligation, but also reflects Sarawak Water’s concern in giving back to society and supporting the socio-economic development of Sarawak.
She added that Sarawak Water will continue to strengthen its role as a responsible and integrity-driven organisation, always prioritising the wellbeing of the people in line with the Sarawak government’s aspirations.
She further said the company will remain committed to implementing corporate social responsibility initiatives that benefit the community and support the State’s sustainable development agenda.
Also present at the ceremony were Sarawak Secretary cum Sarawak Water Board of Directors Chairman, Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki; Sarawak Mufti Datu Khalidi Ibrahim. — DayakDaily
