KUCHING, Feb 6: The Sarawak government will host Chinese New Year (CNY) celebrations with a State-level open house at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) on Feb 17 from 10am to 2pm.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said the celebration will be graced by Sarawak Governor Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and is open to the public.
The open house will showcase performances by local talents, reflecting Sarawak’s unity and diversity.
“We believe in promoting local talents. There will be lion and dragon dances, as well as Chinese New Year songs performed not only by Chinese, but also by Dayaks and Muslims who studied in Chinese schools.
“We are very proud of this,” he told reporters after the Chinese New Year lighting-up ceremony of the White Cat at the Padungan roundabout yesterday (Feb 5).
Dr Sim added that Chinese New Year is a time for reunion for all Sarawakians, especially those returning from other states and overseas.
He also reminded the public to prioritise safety while travelling during the festive season.
“With better roads, more people are driving. Please drive safely. If you drink, don’t drive. We want everyone to have a happy New Year, not end up in hospital,” he said.
The Deputy Premier encouraged the public to attend the open house and celebrate the festive season together in the spirit of unity and harmony.
