SARIKEI, April 9: A bush fire that broke out along Jalan Sakam here yesterday has scorched an estimated four hectares of land, with firefighters working into the night to contain the blaze before suspending operations due to accessibility challenges.
The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Sarikei received an emergency call at 3.54pm on Wednesday (April 8), prompting an immediate response to the scene.
According to the Operations Commander, PBK I Kilok Lampas, the fire involved dense undergrowth and posed a risk of spreading to a nearby housing construction site.
Firefighters deployed two 1,000-foot hose lines, supported by a fire engine pump, while drawing water from a nearby fire hydrant to contain the flames and prevent further spread to the construction area.
Efforts were focused on controlling the fire line closest to the housing development, with personnel working within approximately 20 metres of the site boundary.
As of last night, 1.22 hectares of the affected area had been successfully extinguished, while 2.78 hectares remained burning.
Operations were called off at 10.59pm after the fire spread deeper into areas without road access, making it unsafe and difficult for crews to proceed in the dark.
Firefighting efforts are scheduled to resume this morning (April 9), with teams expected to continue tackling the remaining hotspots and prevent further spread. — DayakDaily
