SARIKEI (Feb 11): The Chinese New Year Decorations 2026 programme at Taman Layang-Layang has added vibrancy to public spaces while reinforcing harmony among Sarikei’s multiracial community.
Deputy Minister of Plantation and Commodities and Sarikei MP, Dato Sri Huang Tiong Sii, said the programme was designed to enliven the festive atmosphere while promoting unity and goodwill among residents.
“Chinese New Year is not just a cultural celebration; it symbolises new beginnings and hope for a more prosperous future,” he said when officiating the event on Saturday, as reported by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas).
Huang added that decorating public areas with festive elements help strengthen inter-ethnic relations and social cohesion in the district.

Huang hands out mandarin oranges to children during the event.
He also expressed appreciation for the dedication of those involved, noting that such initiatives not only beautify the town but can also boost tourism and generate local economic activity.
“Continuous efforts like this should be sustained to create a more cheerful, comfortable, and inclusive urban environment for all members of the community,” he said.
This year’s decorations feature a mix of traditional and modern elements, including red lanterns, community-friendly creative displays, and zodiac-themed replicas celebrating the Year of the Horse.
Also present were Sarikei District Council chairman Councillor Stephen Wong Kie Yong, council members, the district council secretary, and local community leaders.
