Family fun in a coastal haven

My family and I recently had an absolute blast during our short staycation at Fanorama Homestay in Kampung Telok Melano, Sematan.

It was the first time we travelled across the Pan Borneo Highway and visited the remote fishing village, located at the state’s northwest tip.

It took about two hours to get there from our house at Jalan Matang; the excellent road conditions made the trip pleasant and comfortable.

Fanorama Homestay was only a short stroll from Telok Melano Kilometre Zero, the starting point of the Pan Borneo Highway.

This accommodation has two types of units: a longhouse and a chalet. The longhouse unit has seven rooms, whereas the chalet offers three rooms. Longhouse rooms range from RM130 to RM250, while a chalet costs RM450.

We decided to stay in a room in the longhouse unit. There was one single bed and one queen bed in it. The room was also equipped with an air conditioner, a wall fan, and a bathroom.

It was spacious and comfortable enough for my family of four. My two boys were free to play in the room as well. But if there are other guests, I would try to avoid the kids running around because the noise from the wooden floor can be bothersome to the people who are staying in the rooms next door.

Above all, this is the place where you can get all the serenity you are looking for. You will be greeted in the morning by the sight of verdant mountains and a crisp sea breeze. It makes your day feel livelier and happier.

Among the other amenities provided here were a fully functional kitchen, a washing machine, a clothes drying rack, outdoor barbecue pits, an outdoor kitchen, a kiddie pool, a portable karaoke speaker with microphones, and parking spaces that can accommodate 10 to 12 cars.

As the floors in the kiddie pool were quite slippery, you should keep an eye on your small children. In light of this, a warning notice board has been erected by the homestay management close to the pool.

Since the nearest town, Sematan, was about a 30-minute drive away, we made use of this lodging’s advantage: its fully furnished kitchen.

Sufficient food was purchased for our three-day, two-night stay, including both wet and dry options as well as drinks, which were very important for soothing parched throats after a strenuous day at the beach.

There were also food stalls close by, so don’t worry if you’re too lazy to cook. This homestay also provides room service; all you have to do is call the numbers listed, place your order, and voila, your food will be delivered right to your front door!

Despite the fact that the weather is a little unpredictable right now, we had a very pleasant holiday because the days were consistently bright and warm.

Hence, my spouse and I were able to take our boys swimming and beach-playing. The beach is about a three-minute walk from the homestay. Despite the sea being a little choppy, the kids can safely swim in it as long as they are under adult supervision.

The good news is that, if the sea conditions are safe, you can participate in water-related activities like fishing and seaside tours, which are organised by the homestay.

Following are the return trip costs based on the preferred fishing spot; a boat can accommodate up to 10 people:

  • Telok Melano to Tanjung Datu: RM450
  • Telok Melano culvert: RM650
  • Reef balls near the culvert: RM650
  • Niger Bank: RM850
  • Alor 1: RM750
  • Alor 2: RM850

Those who like breathtaking views of the coast can take advantage of the RM450 boat ride from Telok Melano to Tanjung Datu. Each boat also holds a maximum of 10 passengers.

You can engage in free and easy activities like snorkelling and fishing (equipment not provided) while on the cruise. If you’re lucky, you might be able to spot a bale of turtles and a school of dolphins swimming in the pristine blue ocean.

One of Sarawak’s smallest national parks, Tanjung Datu National Park, is another option for visitors to explore in between. However, I’m not sure if there is a separate fee or if the same one is charged.

According to Sarawak Forestry Corporation’s website, Tanjung Datu, which is only reachable by boat, is often referred to as the “Heaven of Borneo” by some visitors. What makes it so picturesque is the contrast between the rough mountains that sweep down to a clear turquoise sea.

It is strongly advised that guests stay overnight to make the most of this fascinating and diverse park. However, there is no cafeteria or catering service provided, but basic cooking facilities are available in their accommodations.

For those of you who have never been to Telok Melano or who intend to visit, Fanorama Homestay is a great option for lodging.

Along with all the amenities offered, guests will also be welcomed and served by the friendly and helpful owners. Trust me, you won’t regret staying at this homestay!
