Security guard jailed one year for break-in, theft at Miri store

MIRI (Sept 4): A security guard was sentenced by the Magistrates’ Court here today to one year in prison for committing housebreaking and theft.

Mohamad Rardi Gunari, 27, of Kampung Tukau Jaya Bakam pleaded guilty before Magistrate Randu Rangen after the charge under Section 457 of the Penal Code was read to him.

The Section provides a jail term of up to five years and also liable to a fine, upon conviction.

The accused was ordered to serve his sentence from the date of his arrest on Aug 31 this year.

He committed the offence at a home furnishing store in the city centre here at around 11.52pm on Aug 20, 2024.

Among the items stolen during the break-in were three watches, a speaker and a decorative lamp.

In mitigation, the unrepresented accused pleaded for a lenient sentence as it was his first offence.

He also told the court that he has to provide for his wife and two children.
