SELANGAU: The construction of the Selangau Sports Complex has been left in limbo due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Tamin assemblyman Christopher Gira Sambang stated that the Selangau Sports Complex is a public project funded by the Sarawak government, initially budgeted at RM7.9 million.

“I was informed that the Sarawak Government approved an allocation of RM8 million for the construction of this complex,” he said.

The project was awarded to a contractor on Aug 5, 2020, with a scheduled completion date of June 4, 2022. However, the contractor withdrew from the project in 2021 due to the pandemic.

As of now, construction of the Selangau Sports Complex remains stalled, with no work carried out at the site.

“The Selangau Sports Complex is the only sports facility in the Selangau District and is highly anticipated by the local residents for hosting sports activities,” Gira added.

“As the representative of Tamin, I sincerely hope that this project receives the attention of the Sarawak Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Sarawak government to ensure that Selangau is not left behind in sports development.”

He expressed frustration at seeing the project signboard in place but no progress being made.

For the record, the Selangau Sports Complex is expected to feature facilities such as a football field, running track, high jump and long jump areas, a hall, parking spaces and other sports amenities.
