Senior citizen killed after pickup crushed by cement lorry in Sibu

SIBU (Feb 10): A 60-year-old man was killed in a road accident at Jalan Deshon here today when his pickup truck was crushed by a cement lorry.

Sibu Fire and Rescue (Bomba) Zone 4 chief Andy Alie said the incident occurred around noon near Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Rosli Dhoby.

Eight firefighters personnel from Sungai Merah fire station were deplayed to the scene.

“Despite efforts by firefighters to free the trapped victim using airbags, the operation was initially unsuccessful.

“Assistance from a private crane also failed to lift the lorry, and a second crane was awaited to continue rescue attempts, “ he said in a statement.

Andy said the victim was eventually extricated and was confirmed dead at the scene by paramedics from the Health Ministry.

Investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing.

Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili, when contaced, confirmed the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) Road Transport Act (1987)
