SIBU (Dec 30): Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Dato Sri Tiong King Sing has called on community and village leaders (KMKK) to remain united, honest and sincere in serving the people.

He said KMKK should not misuse their positions as longhouse chief, ‘penghulu’ or ‘pemanca’ to assert status or personal influence, but instead focus on providing genuine service to the communities.

“KMKK must be united and honest in their judgment.

“Do not misuse your position to show that you hold a high rank. Your duty is to serve the people sincerely,” he said when officiating at the Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) Dudong branch appreciation dinner held at the Durin basketball court here on Monday.

The PDP president stressed that KMKK should actively engage with their communities by understanding residents’ needs, challenges and the development requirements in their respective areas.

According to Tiong, community leaders who are committed to serving the people must take responsibility for addressing issues on the ground, and should seek assistance if problems cannot be resolved at their level.

He also stressed that personal interests must not take precedence over public service.

The Dudong assemblyman also issued a firm warning that any KMKK found abusing their position for personal gain would face immediate action.

“If it is discovered that a KMKK is using their position for personal interests, I will not hesitate to take action, including dismissal,” he said, adding that he wants issues faced by the people to be resolved promptly through cooperation.

“As party president, I want to see our leaders serve the people, not themselves,” he added.

Also present were PDP senior vice presidents Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh and Dato Rolland Duat Jubin, as well as PDP Dudong branch chairman Datuk Teo Boon Siew.
