BINTULU (March 12): Seven men and a woman, aged between 26 and 44, were arrested during a police operation conducted around town on Tuesday for alleged involvement in drug abuse, with two of them also being investigated for drug possession.
Bintulu district police chief Supt Nixon Joshua Ali said the arrests were part of ongoing efforts to curb drug abuse and prevent related criminal activities in the district.
“Preliminary police screening found that seven of the suspects tested positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine, while one tested positive for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC),” he said in a statement.
Nixon said two suspects are being investigated under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act (DDA) 1952, as well as Section 15(1)(a) of the same Act, while the remaining six are being investigated under Section 15(1)(a) of the same Act.
Under Section 12(2) of the DDA 1952, those convicted may face a fine of up to RM5,000, imprisonment of up to two years, or both.
Meanwhile, an offence under Section 15(1)(a) of the same Act carries a penalty of a fine of up to RM5,000, imprisonment of up to two years, and two years of supervision.
