SIBU: Preparations for the two-day state-level National Day 2024 celebration here, which will be held beginning Aug 30, are currently underway.

Sibu Resident Abang Mohamad Porkan Abang Budiman said two meetings with the state event management unit have been held so far.

“Overall, preparations are progressing well. Once the Borneo Cultural Festival (BCF) concludes this week, the preparation committee will continue making the necessary arrangements at the venue.

“Meanwhile, at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang Phase II, the Merdeka Bazaar will be held as an attraction for the public to buy food and other items, and for local entrepreneurs to increase their income,” he said  during a press conference today.

On the National Day celebration, he is optimistic that the presence of various popular artists will attract a large number of visitors.

Abang Mohamad also urged the public to fly the Jalur Gemilang (Malaysian flag) in conjunction with the National Month to demonstrate their loyalty and love for the country.

“I call on all the people of Sibu, especially, to participate in the events being held and to fly the Jalur Gemilang at every department, stall, eatery, home, school, temple, mosque, and church, as well as NGOs and associations, longhouses, and villages in Sibu and Sarawak in general, to show their love for the country.

“It is hoped that the celebration will further strengthen the spirit of unity and harmony among the diverse people of this country,” he added.

The state-level National Day celebration is themed ‘Jiwa Merdeka’.

There are three main events: the countdown event at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang on Aug 30, and on Aug 31, a free ‘Fun Walk’ event and the National Day celebration assembly will be held.
