SIBU (Jan 18): The Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) must provide a comprehensive explanation on the progress of works and construction quality of the Jalan Ling Kai Cheng upgrading project to safeguard public safety and protect the people’s rights, said Sibu MP Oscar Ling’s special aide, Irene Wong.
While acknowledging earlier reports that the upgrading project is scheduled for completion on Jan 17 this year, Wong noted that the road section stretching from the Jalan Deshon traffic lights to SMK Bandar Sibu continues to draw public complaints over surface collapses and damage.
“This raises questions as to why the road condition remains unsatisfactory even though the project has yet to be fully completed,” she said in a statement.
Wong questioned whether SMC had carried out a proper on-site supervision and inspections of the project’s implementation, and whether the construction works strictly adhered to established engineering standards and safety regulations.
She stressed that the council has a responsibility to clearly explain to the public whether the affected road section meets completion requirements or if the project has experienced delays.
Wong added that the potholes began appearing in certain sections shortly after the road was reopened to traffic, posing serious risks to motorists and causing significant inconvenience to road users.
“This has triggered strong public dissatisfaction over the condition of the road,” she said.
She further pointed out that several sections leading into the town area have yet to be marked with road lines or equipped with traffic signage, further increasing safety risks for road users.
