Sibu woman fined RM1,000 for buying illegal lottery ticket costing RM4

KUCHING (Oct 11): A woman from Sibu was fined RM1,000 in default three weeks in jail by the Magistrates’ Court here for buying an illegal lottery ticket.

Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan imposed the fine on Nursyafika Philip Abdullah, 29, after she pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.

The Section carries a fine not exceeding RM5,000, or a jail term of up to six months, or both upon conviction.

Nursyafika committed the offence at a premises near Kuching City Mall, Mile 4 at around 10.50am on Sept 25.

Based on the facts of the case, a team of police conducting Op Dadu raided the premises on suspicion of illegal lottery activities.

Upon arrival at the premises, they arrested Nursyafika and seized her mobile phone along with RM8.

Experts later found the mobile phone contained an illegal lottery number, which cost RM4.

ASP Mohd Adzmei Ahmad prosecuted the case while Nursyafika did not have legal representation.
