SERIAN (Jan 9): The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) plans to upgrade the Taman Duranda Emas hall in Siburan into a static temporary evacuation centre (PPS) for flood-affected residents, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.
The SDMC chairman said this is the first time the hall has been used as an evacuation centre.
“We will register this hall as a PPS. The Serian Resident will have to assess this and upgrade this hall so that it can provide comfort to the affected victims,” he said when met during his visit to the hall here.
Uggah said 188 victims from 48 households were evacuated to the hall at about 3am today.
Although there were initially no basic amenities such as water supply and toilets, these issues were quickly addressed.
He said the Serian Division has been significantly affected by floods, with eight PPS activated as of this afternoon.
There have also been 15 landslides and 13 road closures reported within the division, he added.
Uggah advised residents in flood-prone areas to cooperate with authorities and comply with evacuation orders for their safety, and assured that police would monitor evacuated houses.
