Six teenagers busted, 53 motorcycles seized in Op Samseng Jalanan

KUCHING: Traffic police arrested six teens for allegedly riding their motorcycles dangerously along Jalan Tun Datuk Patinggi Haji Abdul Rahman Yakub, here.

The operation codenamed ‘Op Samseng Jalanan’  by six officers and 36 members of the Kuching Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division, took place from 12.30 am on Sunday (July 7).

Kuching police chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah said the suspects were performing dangerous stunts with their motorcycles and endangering their lives as well as other road users.

“All six, aged between 15 and 18, were arrested and taken to the Kuching police headquarters (IPD) for further action.

“The case is being investigated under Section 42 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which provides for fines of up to RM15,000, imprisonment of up to five years as well as licence disqualification of up to five years,” he said.

In addition, police also confiscated 53 motorcycles under Section 60 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1978 for various modification offences.

Throughout the operation, Ahsmon said the team inspected 365 motorcycles and issued a total of 384 traffic summonses against the motorists for various offences.

Among them are modified vehicle structure and exhaust systems (69), licence plates not according to regulations (59), no side mirrors (52), expired road taxes (36), and riding without valid licences (34).

Between January and June this year, the Kuching traffic police carried out eight ‘Op Samseng Jalanan’ operations and made five arrests.
