SIBU (March 12): The situation involving the collapsed shophouse building at Jalan Pahlawan here is currently being assessed by the relevant authorities and will be deliberated by the Sibu Division Disaster Management Committee.

In stating this, Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) deputy chairman Mohammed Abdullah Izkandar Roseley said technical information, including data relating to ground movement assessed by a qualified professional, will be made available to assist in the committee’s evaluation.

“The Natural Resources and Environment Board and Ministry of Health are also expected to be involved in evaluating environmental concerns, including potential leachate arising from decomposing frozen food products,” he said.

He noted that the site has been assessed as unsafe, and both the Fire and Rescue Department and the Royal Malaysia Police have advised against entering the structure due to safety risks.

Meanwhile, observation at the site today found police personnel guarding the area to prevent members of the public from entering.

The site has remained off-limits since the incident in the early hours of Feb 13, when a corner unit of a row of shophouses along Jalan Pahlawan collapsed onto the road, affecting eight units in the same block.
