MIRI (July 9): Marcus Chew Ee How, an up-and-coming junior track and field athlete from SMK Lutong, has been selected to represent Malaysia at the 29th MSSM-AW-SSSC International Little Athletics Championships 2024.

The championship will be held at Bukit Jalil, MSN Mini Stadium from July 13-14 and is participated by Malaysia, Australia and Singapore.

Marcus, who is from the Form 2 Einstein class, will compete in discus and javelin throwing events, said the school in a statement today.

Marcus qualified by throwing a distance of 44.47m in the discus event to bring back the silver medal at the Selangor Junior Athletics Championship.

Prior to that, he had already chalked up a longer throw at 45.39m in the RS Track and Field Championship in Kota Kinabalu and brought home a gold medal.

“With this result, Marcus was qualified and chosen to represent Malaysia for the meet,” a school spokesperson told The Borneo Post.

Coach Ngu Kit Min from the National Sports Council (MSN) Sarawak has been training and preparing Marcus since last year to prepare him for this year’s tournaments.

Meanwhile, Marcus will return from the meet to represent SMK Lutong in the upcoming Miri School Division Athletics Meet from July 23-26.

The school said it is proud and honoured another of its athletes has been selected to represent Malaysia in the championships.

“It has been many years that a track and field athlete from this school was selected for this event. Congratulations to Marcus for his incredible achievement and the school wishes him all the best,” said the spokesperson.

Previously, two of its students made Malaysia proud by clinching medals at the 15th SEA Youth Athletic Championships in 2023 — Dylan Leo Saran Stephen, who helped the national 4x100m relay team storm to the gold medal, and Hii Seng Yan, who finished third in shotput.
