MIRI (Jan 15): Miri MP Chiew Choon Man has allocated RM100,000 to SMK Lutong to carry out maintenance works and improve safety within the school compound.
The allocation, channelled to the SMK Lutong Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) on Jan 2, aimed at addressing infrastructure issues, upgrading existing facilities, purchasing essential assets and installing closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras to enhance security.
Chiew, who is also Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia, said the allocation was made following several site visits to schools in the Miri parliamentary constituency, including SMK Lutong, where maintenance needs were identified.
“The allocation is intended to ensure that school facilities are in a comfortable and safe condition for students and educators,” he said in a statement on Wednesday.
He also urged the State Education Department to reduce bureaucratic procedures that could delay maintenance works, stressing that issues affecting school infrastructure should be resolved in a timely and effective manner.
Meanwhile, Chiew expressed appreciation to parents for highlighting concerns over the deteriorating condition of certain classroom facilities, noting that their feedback played an important role in ensuring prompt action.
As a follow-up, a team from the Miri Member of Parliament’s Service Centre visited SMK Lutong on Wednesday morning to assess the current situation and gather further feedback on additional needs, to ensure maintenance works can be carried out comprehensively.
Chiew said he will continue to work closely with school authorities, parents and relevant agencies to ensure that schools in Miri are well maintained and provide a safe learning environment for students.
