Spectacular Chap Goh Mei parade marks joyful close to Chinese New Year in Bau

BAU, March 3: The Chap Goh Mei parade, marking the official finale of Chinese New Year on the 15th day of the lunar calendar, was celebrated with vibrant colours and lively performances, reflecting the strong spirit of unity among Bau’s multiracial community.

According to Information Department Sarawak, the parade kicked off from the Tsian Tse Temple compound and wound its way through Bau town, featuring around 160 contingents, including lion and dragon dance troupes, as well as representatives from various local communities.

The route along the town’s main streets allowed residents and visitors alike to enjoy the festivities up close.

Organised annually by the Bau Chinese Charitable Trust Board, the event aims to preserve cultural heritage while fostering community cohesion.

The celebration also received support from multiple government agencies and local organisations, ensuring a well-coordinated and lively occasion.

The festivities were further enlivened by the presence of Deputy Minister of Transport (Marine and River), Datuk Henry Harry Jinep, who not only joined the parade but also interacted warmly with residents, taking photos and engaging with the community without regard to background, a gesture that highlighted leadership that is close to the people.

In his speech, Harry underscored the importance of maintaining the spirit of unity and harmony showcased in events like Chap Goh Mei.

“Celebrating cultural diversity together is a cornerstone for building a stable, peaceful, and progressive society,” he reminded.

The 2026 Chap Goh Mei parade not only brought the Chinese New Year celebrations to a spectacular close but also reaffirmed that harmony and unity continue to flourish in Bau.

Also present at the event were Bau District Officer Eddy Nayoi, Bau District Council secretary Ong Chin Ping, Temenggong of the Kuching Division Bidayuh Community Atok Derop, local community leaders and headmen (KMKK), as well as department heads. — DayakDaily
