KUCHING, Nov 30: The Yayasan Sarawak Gold Cup Football Championship has once again reaffirmed its role as a key engine driving grassroots sports development and shaping Sarawak’s next generation of athletes.
Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the tournament is more than just a contest for medals — it is a platform that instils character, discipline and integrity in young players.
“In sports, determination matters more than results alone, and we firmly believe that competitions such as this can foster positive and healthy rivalry.
“This will certainly help shape strong values, build teamwork, enhance physical and mental resilience and cultivate civic-mindedness, including noble values that contribute to the growth of capable and exemplary individuals,” he said at the tournament’s closing ceremony at the Sarawak State Stadium yesterday (Nov 29).
The event was officiated by Sarawak Governor Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi.
Abdul Karim also urged teachers and students to remain committed to strengthening sports and co-curricular activities in schools, saying such platforms are crucial for long-term talent development.
