KUCHING (Jan 13): The Voluntary Patrol Scheme (SRS) Sungai Maong lodge was officially launched on Sunday night to enhance safety and security within the community.
Organising chairman Yiew Leong Yee said the establishment of the lodge reflects the strong commitment of local residents to safeguarding their neighbourhood.
He highlighted the close cooperation between the SRS team, the police and relevant authorities in addressing security concerns and maintaining public order.
“The lodge has been in the planning stages for the past four years.
“With the support of the Batu Lintang assemblyman and the local community, we have finally managed to complete it.
“The SRS team plays an essential role in safeguarding the safety of the residents here,” he said.
Batu Lintang assemblyman See Chee How, who officiated the launch, emphasised that safety and security are shared responsibilities that require active community participation.
“Everybody has a role to play in ensuring the safety and security of our neighbourhoods.
“We also appreciate the efforts of the authorities in maintaining peace and harmony in the area,” he said.
Meanwhile, SRS Sungai Maong president Desmond Ong said the team will conduct weekly patrols to monitor and ensure community safety.
“The team currently comprises 30 active members who conduct patrols once a week in this area. We have also set up a community group chat involving about 400 residents, Ong added.
According to him, the group chat allows residents to lodge complaints and share information, which are then addressed by the SRS team or relevant authorities.
“Based on complaints received, we are also empowered to carry out roadblocks when necessary,” he said.
