Lau says the younger generation represents the hope and future of the nation, and their participation in sports is always treasured.
SIBU (Feb 6): Sports provide an essential platform to build mental strength and shape the characters of the participants, said Councillor Kevin Lau.
The Sarawak United People’s Party Bawang Assan chairman said the younger generation represents the hope and future of the nation, and their participation in sports is always treasured.
“Throughout history, it is the younger generation who rise to become future leaders and pillars of strength for our country.
“Therefore, I hope all of you will continue to cooperate, strengthen your relationships, and work together closely for a better future,” he said at the closing of the Sibu Division Inter-Schools Cross Country championship held at SMK Bawang Assan.
The championship, organised by SMK Bawang Assan, attracted 606 participants from 28 secondary schools across Sibu, Kanowit and Selangau.
Lau said the championship also provided a valuable opportunity for participants to understand the diversity and backgrounds of students from other schools.
“This is your chance to build strong cooperation and, importantly, to establish meaningful relationships so that together we can foster mutual respect and a spirit of progress within our society,” he said.
He said such values are vital as students grow into future pillars of strength for Sarawak.
He also emphasised the importance of developing mental resilience and cultivating positive values, noting that students often face considerable academic and social pressures after returning to school.
“Therefore, I would like to remind all of you to continue practising a healthy lifestyle and to stay away from unhealthy influences such as drugs and especially electronic cigarettes.”
Earlier, Lau described the event as a symbol of unity among secondary schools in the Sibu division, made possible through the cooperation of educators, students and teachers.
He said the championship was not merely about testing abilities or endurance, but also about bringing students together as one community despite their differences.
“Through such event, you will be able to experience different environments and learn to appreciate the cultures of various areas,” he added.
Also present was Sibu Education officer Ahli Chikba and SMK Bawang Assan principal Kong Chiong Hui.
