KUCHING, August 18: Sarawak archer 17-year-old Joey Tan Xing Ling earned a gold medal in the Women’s 70-metre Recurve in Malaysia Games (Sukma) 2024 with 645 points.

Selangor archer Nur Ieka Hariesya ZH won silver despite shooting the same 629 score as Federal Territories archer Alia Qursyiah BM, who won bronze.

Nur Ieka secured the silver by scoring more points within the ‘bull’s eye‘ range points (of 10 points and ‘X’) compared to Alia Qursyiah.

Tan said she did not expect to win gold as she had not scored that high during training.

She is scheduled to compete in three more archery events in Sukma 2024, comprising individual, mixed team and team events, for Sarawak in the 70m Recurve.

“I hopento achieve our targets and hopefully another three golds,” she told reporters after the presentation ceremony held at the Archery Centre here today.

On the next Sukma, Tan said she has not thought that far ahead yet but, she hoped to represent Sarawak again. In the last Sukma, she won three gold medals and one silver medal in Recurve events.

Meanwhile, in the men’s 70m recurve, Sarawak archer Liew YJ clinched bronze while Terengganu archer Muhammad Saiful Islam and Muhammad Haiqal Danish won gold and silver, respectively. — DayakDaily
